Can You Make Money By Writing A Blog?
There is a very simple answer to the question, “Can you make money by writing a blog?”. That simple answer is “Yes you can!”. You can, anyone can and you don’t need degree standard writing skills to become a successful blogger. However, getting to the point where your blog will start bringing you in a steady income is not as simple.
You cannot write two or three articles for your blog and expect the money to start rolling in. There’s a lot more to it than that. First of all, once you have started your blog you have to be 100% committed to it otherwise it is not going to work. You need to post to your blog regularly to keep the search engines happy. This involves an investment of a lot of your time and effort though not necessarily much of your money. You can get started for very little outlay.
It will take at least six months, more likely over a year, to build up enough content within your blog to attract a large enough audience to sell to. If you want or need to make money quickly, then blogging probably isn’t for you, However, if your goal is to build up a steady and sustainable income over time that may eventually be enough to give up your day job, if you want to run your own business from home or anywhere with an internet connection, if you think you can write over a hundred, content-rich articles that will help and solve problems for your audience, then blogging just may be your thing.
How To Get Started On The Road To Financial Freedom
First of all, you need something to write about in your blog. Your blog will get nowhere if you just write about random, unconnected topics. Your blog must be focused on one particular subject, known in the trade as a “niche”. Your blog needs to be focused on a niche in order for the search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo to start to recognize your blog as an authoritive source of information within that niche. This will lead to higher rankings in the search results. The higher the ranking, the more the likelihood of your blog being seen by potential readers.
As I say, to get your blog to the stage where it is established you will need to write over a hundred articles. To write that much on one subject you need to have a passionate interest in it. You do not have to be an expert on the subject, you can become one as you go along. You just need a passion for it. You would struggle to write consistently about anything that doesn’t interest you.
The niche you choose for your blog needs to be quite specific. I will explain by giving you an example. The “Make Money Online” niche would be too broad and by that I mean it covers too wide an area and there is too much highly established competition for your blog to become an authority website. So, picking a sub-niche within this niche we could narrow it down to “Make Money Online Blogging’, but this is still too broad. The answer to to narrow it down again to “Make Money Online Blogging From Home”, which is the niche I am writing in here. I think this has just the right balance of lower competition but still with a big enough audience. It could be narrowed down again by adding “For Single Parents”, “For Students” or “For Seniors” but, in my opinion this would narrow it down too much. Yes, there would be less competition but I think I would be unnecessarily excluding people from my potential audience.
The Next Steps
After you have made the very important decision of niche selection you will need a website to publish your articles on. Before you can have a website, you need a domain name. This is the first expense you will incur and it will cost you somewhere between 8 USD and 12 USD to register your choice of domain name for one year with a registration company.
The domain name of this website is “homewealthadviser.com”. I own this domain and I have it registered with Wealthy Affiliate, an all-round Internet marketing platform. I have another domain registered with my recommended stand-alone domain registration company, NameCheap.
All domain registration companies feature a domain availability tool which you can use to type in your preferred domain name to see if it is available for purchase. You can either use something relating to your chosen niche or your won name if you are going to establish yourself as an authority on the subject,
I recommend that you select a “.com” domain name. Your blog will be initially dependent on search engine optimization (SEO) to become ranked as high as possible in the search results. SEO is a strategy and choosing a “.com” is part of that strategy. If you think up a domain name that you really like but it isn’t available as a “.com”, then you can use “.net” or “.org” but “.com” is best and certainly do not use any top level domain (TLD) other than one of these three.
Once you have your domain you need a webhosting company to store on its servers the files needed to display your website and its contents to your audience. This is the second expense you will incur setting up your blog. I have my other website hosted with Bluehost, my recommended stand alone webhosting company. A year’s hosting with Bluehost will cost around 60 USD for the “Basic” package, which is good enough for starting out. This website is hosted by Wealthy Affiliate which is included in the small membership fee I pay.
Whichever host you choose, make sure that the WordPress blogging platform is included. WordPress is the most popular and the best platform for building a blog based website.
With niche chosen, domain registered and website hosted you are ready to start writing your articles. To rank in the search engines and to gain authority for your website, each article must be focused on a single keyword, a new keyword not used before for your blog.
A keyword is a word or phrase that someone, somewhere in the world, types into a search box when looking for relative information that will solve a problem, answer a question or fulfill a need. The keyword I have focused this article around is “can you make money by writing a blog”. I am answering that question and providing much more valuable information relating to that keyword. This is what you must do with all of your blog content.
The keyword you choose to write about must be one that you know is searched for at least 30 times par month but doesn’t have so much competition from established websites that you will never get your post on page one of the search results. You need your posts on page one because there are few people using search engines that will bother to look past page one of the results. The most efficient way to find suitable keywords is by using keyword research tools.
There are many keyword research tools online, some free and some paid for. Generally, although the free tools will find you thousands of keywords, they do not give you any vital information about how many times each keyword has been typed in each month or how much competition it has. The one notable exception is the free Google Keyword Planner tool, available to you if you open a Google Ads account. Don’t worry, you do not have to publish any ads, you are only joining to use the keyword planner. This tool will give you the average searches per month within a range for a given keyword plus hundreds more related keywords. However, the competition information provided pertains only to Google Ads and not to organic search results.
As soon as you can, I suggest opening an account for a paid keyword research tool. The one that I use is Jaaxy and I get to use it at no extra cost as it is included in my Wealthy Affiliate subscription. To sign up for Jaaxy as a stand-alone is free for the first 30 searches to give you an idea of what it can deliver. After that, an upgrade to the next level would cost you 19 USD per month. Jaaxy will give you keywords related to the one you input plus information on how many times a keyword has been searched for in a month, how many site visitors you can expect if you were to rank on page one and exactly how much competition that keyword has. Each keyword is also assigned an SEO score for comparison purposes.
It is time efficient to do your keyword research in batches and build up a list of the ones that you can use in your blog, The keywords must make grammatical sense as for maximum SEO you need to use them in your post titles, at least one heading in the posts, the first paragraph of each post, the slug at the end of the URL of the post and the meta description of your post. The meta description is that little snippet of information you can see in the search results under the URL, SEO is further enhanced by writing at least 1,500 words for each post.
But don’t sign up for Jaaxy if you are thinking of joining Wealthy Affiliate as Jaaxy is included.
Now For The Money!
Depending on how competitive your chosen niche is, after you have written about thirty or so posts you may see one or two make page one of the search results. This is when you can think about monetizing your blog. There are several ways of doing this but affiliate marketing, where you recommend products available online and get paid commissions for successful sales is the best way to monetize your first blog as it doesn’t cost you anything, you don’t have to hold ny inventory, you don’t have to do any packing or shipping and after sales is covered by the merchant you are representing You have nothing to lose apart from your reputation, so only recommend products that you would use yourself.
When you find a product that you want to promote you need to apply to join the merchant’s affiliate program, Sometimes you will see a link to “join our affiliate program” on the merchant’s website. If not, in your favorite search engine type “[product name] + affiliate program” or “[merchant’s name] + affiliate program” and if there is such a thing it should turn up in the results. Once you have been accepted the merchant will supply you links to products with your tracking code included in it so that the merchant knows who referred the customer. These links can be text only, image only, image and text, video or banner ad. The links can be copied and pasted into your posts and product review posts. When someone from your audience clicks on one of these links and buys something you will receive a commission.
Other ways you can monetize your blog include dropshipping, selling digital products, selling physical products and selling your own product or service. Most of these methods are for when you have a little more experience because you will have to personally deal with any problems that arise between you and your customer. I will cover all of these methods and affiliate marketing in more detail in future posts.

If you follow the advice in this post and work hard at your writing and consistency, in a year’s time you could be earning a steady income from your blog and it will only be costing you around 25 USD per month in hosting and keyword research to maintain it.
